The Problem with the SHL Practice Tests
The SHL tests (official test providers) are great and I highly recommend you use them, but the problem is; there is only one practice test for each section & they don’t show you the answers nor provide explanations for the answers.
This is why I created this website; to help anyone who was in the same position as me; you want extra questions specific to the entrance test, you don’t want to waste time looking for practice material online & you don’t want to spend a lot of money.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
“I want to give a huge thanks for making some affordable practice materials for the entrance test, it was really helpful leading up to my test (which I did really well in). Your exams coupled with the like for like ones from the SHL website really created a great practicing environment, I believe set me up for success. So, thank you!” – Jacob 2026

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
“Hey Luke, just thought I’d reach out and let you know I passed my army aptitude test with flying colours. Went on to pass my fitness and interview. So I just wanted to give you an email to say thanks and I appreciate your time explaining some of the questions to me. It felt like I was sitting one of your test when I done the actual tests. Really appreciate it and will be sure to recommend your test to others.” – Max 2026

FAQs - NZ Defence Force Entrance Test
The information below is based on my experience sitting the NZ Defence Force Aptitude Test.
Have a question that I haven’t covered below? Message me in the contact form at the bottom of page.
What does the NZ Defence Force entrance test involve?
– You will have two tests to complete; the General Ability & the Mechanical Comprehension
– The General Ability test has 30 Questions and you have 36 minutes to complete it.
– The General Ability test is made up of Deductive, Inductive & Numerical Questions presented in a random order.
– All questions are multi-choice.
– The Mechanical Comprehension test has 20 Questions and you have 15 minutes to complete it.
– In both tests, you will NOT be able to go back to answer previous questions.
– The tests are designed to measure certain skills and to help determine which areas of the Defense Force you will be best suited for, an officer for example.
How Difficult is the Entrance Exam?
– This is a difficult question to answer, as everyone is coming from a different place, however I will say a few things:
– The questions do not become harder as you go along. I actually found the first couple of questions to be challenging and in hindsight, wish I had spent some more time on.
– I found I could answer all of the questions with some time to spare. I’ve done aptitude tests where this wasn’t the case so don’t feel like you need to rush.
– The verbal reasoning questions were all very similar and were asking you to work out the order of things (see practice deduction questions above). I have made sure there are plenty of these types of questions in my practice tests so you should be well prepared.
How Easy to Use is the Exam Software?
– The software is quite straight forward and user friendly. There will be some practice questions before the test to familiarise yourself, one for each section ie, abstract, verbal & numerical.
– Each question has 5-6 multiple choice responses and you simple select the answer by clicking on it.
How Similar Are My Practice Tests?
– I created the practice exams based on my experience sitting the NZDF entrance test so I am very confident the practice questions are the same format as the entrance test.
– If you take the time to go through the explanations to the questions you get wrong, and then keep practicing until you are passing the practice tests with ease (see study guide below), I am confident you will do well come exam day (assuming you perform well under pressure!).
Can I Use a Calculator?
Yes, a calculator along with pen and paper are permitted during the tests.
Are You Provided with Sample Questions Beforehand?
Before you take each test, you will be shown a number of sample questions with explanations on how to answer them. There is no time limit for going through these.
Study Guide - How to Get the Most Out of the NZDF Practice Tests
General Tips:
- Completing the practice exams over and over again on the same day or in quick succession loses its benefits as you become familiar with the questions. Avoid doing this. Spread your practice across multiple days and ideally weeks.
- The tests are designed so it’s difficult to answer all the questions within the time limit. If some questions look too hard or are taking too long to answer, take a guess and move on.
- The more time you put in to prepare, the better your chance of getting a higher mark.
Step 1: Start with Individual Practice Tests
- The 3x General Ability tests are the most important of the practice tests, as they will give you the closest experience to the real entrance test. The first time you sit each of the 3x General Ability tests is the most important, as you will become familiar with/remember some questions if/when you retake them. This is why I suggest taking the #1 individual practice tests first.
- Go through each of the first individual practice tests. These can all be done over one or several days.
- At the end of each test, make a note of the date and result you received, as you want to compare the results to the other tests or if you do the same tests again.
- If you did well on the individual practice tests, proceed to Step 3. If you didn’t do well in one or more sections, proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Review Explanations for Incorrect Questions
- For any questions marked incorrect, take the time to understand where you went wrong. This is the important step!
- Once you have reviewed the explanations and understood your mistakes, repeat the #1 individual tests. Ideally, wait a few hours or even a day before retaking them.
- Why repeat the same tests? You will now know what to expect from each section, and having gone through the explanations for the incorrect questions, you should be in a position to improve your results.
- If you scored higher, great work—proceed to Step 3.
- If you scored the same or lower, ask yourself what happened. Where did you go wrong? Take time to dig deeper and reflect—e.g., was it time pressure? Were you rushing? Are there patterns in your errors?
- If you are struggling with certain types of questions, YouTube and AI models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity can be a great help. For example, upload a screenshot of a practice question to one of these language models and ask it to explain the answer in easier-to-understand language. Or ask the language models to create practice questions specific to the ones you are struggling with so you can work on your weaknesses (more on this below).
- After taking the first #1 individual tests two times, move on to Step 3
Step 3: Take the 1st General Ability Practice Test
- Treat the 1st General Ability test seriously. Make sure you are relaxed, not rushing to squeeze it in, will not be interrupted, and are well rested.
- You have just over 60 seconds per question, so if you are struggling with a question, take a guess and move on.
- After completing the test, note the date and your results.
- Determine your strengths and weaknesses—work out how many correct answers you had for each section by tallying them up and calculating the percentage.
- What sections did you do well in? What sections require improvement?
- If you passed all sections with ease, you’re in a good place to pass the entrance test. If this is you, wait at least a day before taking the second General Ability practice test. Why? After the first test, your nerves will probably be settled, and you don’t want that. You want to feel some pressure while taking each General Ability practice test so you can work on becoming comfortable with that pressure. Also, after taking a test, you will be in a “mindset” of answering questions, so waiting until the next day will help you take the next test fresh.
- If you have weaknesses to improve, read on.
Step 4: Improve Your Weaknesses
- Go through the 2nd and 3rd individual practice tests.
- Again, record the date of each test and your results.
- Similar to Step 2, take the time to go through the incorrect questions and their explanations to understand where you went wrong. It’s not about looking at the correct answer—it’s about understanding how the correct answer was obtained.
- Compare the results of the 2nd and 3rd individual practice tests with the 1st. Have you improved over the 3x tests? Have you passed all 3x of them? If so, congrats—move on to Step 5.
- If your results have not improved over the 3x individual practice tests or you haven’t passed any of them, you might need external help. Have you tried using a language model such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity to assist with the answer explanations? If not, try that. Or do you know someone who can help with the questions? That would be ideal. Failing those options, consider getting a tutor—Google “aptitude test tutors NZ” or for your region.
- If you have plenty of time before the entrance test, take the 2nd General Ability test and leave the 3rd General Ability practice until you have improved your weaknesses and can pass those individual practice test(s) with ease.
- If you allow a week or so between taking the same General Ability practice tests, you will probably not accurately recall the answers, so re-sitting the same test will be beneficial.
Step 5: Complete the 2nd and 3rd General Ability practice Tests
- Repeat the steps from Step 3.
Tips for Accessing Extra Practice Questions
- This works best for numerical and verbal reasoning questions. It doesn’t work for abstract reasoning, as the software isn’t good at creating abstract images.
- Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, or another free online language model.
- Copy a question (or take a screenshot) of a question you want more practice on. Prompt the language model to answer it for you.
- Next, write something along these lines: “Write 10 similar questions as above with 6 multiple-choice answers, including the correct one, but change the subject.”
- If you find the questions too easy, instruct it to increase the difficulty: “Write 10 similar questions as above with 6 possible answers, but change the subject and make it more difficult.”
- You can copy and paste these prompts.
- Once you have answered the generated questions, ask for the answers and explanations. Remember, if you are struggling with the explanations, you can prompt the language model to make it easier to understand with something like, “provide an easier to understand explanation” or, “provide an explanation so a 15 year old can easily understand”.
- This is an easy and quick way to get as much practice as you want on any types of questions you are struggling with. Cool, eh!
Why I Created NZDF Aptitude Test Practice
My name is Luke and I built this website to help recruits like yourself who are on the path to joining the NZ Defence Force.
How? By Offering you extra practice material specific to the NZDF Aptitude Test at an affordable price.
I sat and passed the NZDF entrance test in 2024 and then produced the practice questions found on this website from the entrance test. I am 100% confident my practice questions will help you to prepare to pass the test. So much so, I offer a money back guarantee with no time limit.
How did I get the idea to create this website?
Back in 2018, I applied into the Victoria Police (Australia) and later withdrew my application. However, after sitting their aptitude test, I realised there was an opportunity to help other candidates who were in a similar situation to me when I prepared for the test; they wanted extra practice with similar questions to the official aptitude test.
Since then, I created a series of practice exams for the following organisations: NZ Police, NZ Fire Fighters, Victoria Police, Australia Federal Police, QLD Police, WA Police, VIC Firefighters, NSW Firefighters and QLD Firefighters, helping thousands of recruits like yourself pass their entrance test.
Over that time, I’ve received some great feedback such as from Jacob:
“I want to give a huge thanks for making some affordable practice materials for the entrance exam, it was really helpful leading up to my exam (which I did really well in). Your exams really created a great practicing environment, I believe set me up for success. So, thank you!”
I find helping others to be rewarding & I’ve proven to be quite successful at creating quality aptitude tests. I’m proud of the work I create and am happy to help you out if you’re stuck on a question or wanting advice to prepare for the test. Drop me a line below.
All the best,
Luke
